This is a polaroid that Hopkins Casting took of me when I auditioned for To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. My association with the project began a year before filming, when a friend who works for Scott Rudin (the man behind Sister Act) passed the script along to me and told me to send my photos to Amblin Entertainment. I put together a fabulous packet of my best photos, begging for the chance to audition while at the same time remaining fierce and untouchable. A few weeks went by and I heard nothing - until my friend at Scott Rudin's office called to tell me that Amblin Entertainment already had a favorite drag queen - and it was me! They loved my pictures, my look and my name! I was overjoyed and expected the phone to ring, but a week and a half later it hit the news - Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo would get the lead roles. Oh well, I thought - they decided to go with star power rather than talent. Maybe I could get on as an extra? Another week went by. Feeling frustrated I faxed in a bitchy letter demanding the chance to audition. Sure enough, they called, faxed me some script pages and set up a time to meet. I was to read for the role of last year's beauty contest winner - the queen who would pass her crown down to Wesley and Patrick. It seemed perfect for me, after all, how could anyone see me - and then see them - and expect that I would actually lose to them in a contest?? The dialogue sucked big-time, and as I read for the casting woman I knew I wasn't doing too well. Resigned to being just a pretty face, I walked out of the office feeling slightly depressed. But as I reached the elevator, the casting woman began frantically calling my name. I was rushed back into the office, where I was introduced to Beebron Kidron (whatever her name is), the director! Turns out they were actually floored by my magnificent height (over 7 1/2 ft tall with heels and wig, thank you) and beauty! I had a wonderful 10 minute conversation with "Beebron" about drag, beauty and the meaning of life - and even treated her to a kiss on the cheek before I left. God seemed to smile upon me, and as I rode in the cab on the way home I was confident that I would hear back from them shortly. A week later Entertainment Tonight reported that RuPaul had gotten my part. The movie sucked anyway, didn't it? Since then I haven't done traditional drag. Thanks to To Wong Foo (and RuPaul) full drag became mundane - almost tacky. As a reward for reading my slightly long 'To Wong Foo' story, you now get to see me transform into one of my heroes, Madonna.
Mesmerizing, isn't it? If it hasn't finished loading (isn't moving quickly) yet, be patient. You'll be amazed at how compatible my beauty is with the (former?) Queen of All Fierceness. |
