The House of Diabolique Top Ten Electro Songs
1.
'Play At Your Own Risk' by Planet Patrol
Late 70's disco oversaturated the market. It was overproduced and unreal to urban audiences. Electro, or 'Electric Funk' stripped dance music to its core. Electro spawned the twin towers of dance music - hiphop and house - but never really took off outside of New York or Miami. And yet nothing makes me happier than hearing a robot voice rap over an 808 drumkit. This music is 100% early 80's urban New York, red leather jackets and the West Side Highway. In my opinion the real master of electro was not Afrika Bambaataa but rather Tony Butler who recorded as Pretty Tony and Freestyle ('freestyle' the genre in fact took its name from this pseudonym). He also produced tracks for Debbie Deb, Trinere and the mother of freestyle, Shannon, thereby giving him 5 of our top ten spots. 2. 'Jam the Box' by Pretty Tony 3. 'Don't Stop The Rock' by Freestyle 4. 'Just Give the DJ a Break' by Dynamix II 5. 'Dance' by Egyptian Lover 6. 'When I Hear Music' by Debbie Deb 7. 'The Party Has Just Begun' by Freestyle 8. 'Fix It In The Mix' by Pretty Tony 9. 'Autobahn' by Kraftwerk 10. 'Jam on It' by Newcleus Honorable Mentions for Electro and Electro-inspired tracks (same some early hiphop for good measure): 'Juice' by World Class Wreckin' Cru 'Trans Europe Express' by Kraftwerk 'Planet Rock' by Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force 'Clear' by Cybotron 'Numbers' by Kraftwerk 'Al-Naafiysh (the Soul)' by Hashim 'All Night' by Trinere 'Automatic' by Freestyle 'Body Mechanic' by Quadrant Six 'Computer Power' by Jamie Jupiter 'Feel My Bass' by DJ Matrix 'Girls' by Egyptian Lover 'Hip Hop Be Bop' by Man Parrish 'It Takes Two' by Rob Base 'One More Shot' by C-Bank 'Grab It' by L'Trimm 'Push It' by Salt -n- Pepa 'The Robots' by Kraftwerk 'Rock It' by Herbie Hancock 'Scorpio' by Grandmaster Flash 'White Lines' by Grandmaster Flash 'Break Dancing Electric Boogie' by West Street Mob 'Supersonic' by JJ Fad 'Spacer Woman' by Charlie 'Cyborg Dance' by Newcleus 'Man-made' by Man Parrish To hear all of these songs in succession play the Electro jukebox Or for a special treat, listen to a one-hour set I did for Robots 2001 , a party in honor of the old club Save the Robots. |
