| Week of 12/22/03.. I am excited to give to you as a holiday gift a short interview with David Noller of the electro supergroup Dynamix II, and if you don't know who they are, find out.. because you're in for a treat.. ! -- Who are your musical influences?
Kraftwerk, 2 Live Crew, Pretty Tony, Juan Atkins, Latin Rascals. Do you enjoy 'Pretty Tony' (Tony Butler)? He's my favorite old-school producer. Yes, I love his
works especially the early ones like "Freestyle Express" and 'Fix It In The Mix' I just sampled 'Fix it in the Mix' in my latest mix, '21st Century Boy'! The panicking-robot breakdown is utter genius, breakdancing genius. Of your own tracks, which are your favorite? 'Just Give the DJ a Break', 'We Are Your Future', 'Plastic Men' and the remix we did for Jackal and Hyde of 'Get Down To My Technique' on the Hallucination label. How did you come to collaborate with Phil Klein of Bass Junkie (another one of my favorites), as Cybernet Systems? 'We Are Borg' is my favorite Cybernet Systems track. It's metallic and deep at once. 'Artificial Intelligence' is another good one. He was a very
persistent fan of DII. he kept writing us fanmail one after the other until we
invited him to come hang out with us. What do you make of what's being called 'Electroclash'? I personally like it. It reminds me of early new wave. Its like rebirth of thin ties and big hair. When someone like Larry Tee (who gets a lot of press, at least in NYC, about 'Electroclash') talks about 'Electro' being about image rather than musicality, does it take away from what you do? not really. electro clash and electro are two different styles. electro clash has a stepping bassline and sounds like early new wave. Electro is a synthetic drum machine based sequenced sound that sounds like robots fucking. I resent it when people confuse the two genres. Will you be spinning in New York anytime soon? We are in the process of securing a NY based agent so it will only be a matter of time. Two of my favorite songs of all time are your
own aforementioned 'Just Give the DJ a Break',
and also 'Bass
Generator'.. especially 'Bass Generator'. 'Just give the DJ a
break' was a collaborative effort between all involved at the time. Back
then there were no sample records. You must know that 'Just Give the DJ a Break'
was released way before MARRS-'Pump up the Volume'. It was the first sample based
track with multituned 808 bass to ever be released. It sold over 500,000 records
and was our first record and our first gold record. What does the future hold for you? Many wonderful things I am sure. I have always felt as though I have been riding a endless wave of fortune with an army of guardian angels overhead. ;) !? Anything else you'd like to tell fans of the House of Diabolique? www.dynamixii.com Thank you Dynamix II for your time, your odd slang, and your music, which lifts me up immeasurably. You're a fantastic talent in a huge world of dance music. Happy holidays to all. until next week,
